Description of the family

Climbing shrubs. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, simple, entire. Inflorescences (in ours) composed of axillary racemes. Flowers 4-5-merous, actinomorphic, bisexual. Calyx minute. Stamens opposite the petals. Ovary fusiform, 1-locular; ovule solitary. Fruit drupe-like. Seed large.

Worldwide: 10 genera and 32 species, tropical.

Zambia: 2 genera and 2 taxa.
