Description of the family

Trees, shrubs or lianes. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate. Inflorescences of axillary cymes. Flowers bisexual (or unisexual by abortion), actinomorphic. Perianth segments (in ours) in one 4-8-merous whorl. Stamens 4 in one whorl. Staminodes alternating with the stamens. Ovary inferior, 1-locular; ovule 1. Fruit dry, indehiscent, with (in ours) 2 apical wings.

Worldwide: 5 genera and 57 species, tropics.

Zambia: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
