Description of the genus

Small shrubs, subshrubs or herbs. Leaves opposite and decussate or in whorls of 3. Flowers bisexual, not heterostylous, 4-5-merous. Calyx lobes unequal, one enlarged leaf-like, the others minute. Corolla with both stamens and style exserted. Fruit with crown of persistent calyx, splitting into two mericarps.

Worldwide: 20 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar
