Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Leaves simple, opposite, sessile. Peduncles thickened below the capitula. Capitula homogamous, ray florets 0. Phyllaries in 3-5 series; outer ± broadly ovate, inner longer and narrower. Receptacle without scales. Corolla orange-red (in ours), deeply 5-lobed at apex. Achenes longitudinally ribbed, sometimes 4-5-angled, strigose to hispid. Pappus 1-seriate, of numerous, usually hooked, bristles.

Worldwide: 7 species in tropical Africa

Zambia: 4 taxa.
