Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate. Flowers in spikes or heads. Modified sterile flowers 0; all flowers fertile. Perianth segments 5, equal or ± so. Stamens 5, the filaments fused for at least half their length. Ovary with numerous ovules; stigmas 2-3. Capsule circumscissile. Seeds black, flattened, shiny.

Worldwide: 14 species in tropical and South Africa

Zambia: 2 taxa.
