Description:
Perennial herb, growing from a short rhizome, often forming clusters of leaf rosettes. Leaves lanceolate, 4-10 cm long, thick and spongy, yellow-green, often with a hard yellow-brown tip, woolly in the axils. Flowering stem often solitary, 25-65 cm high, 6-8-ribbed, sheaths usually much longer than the leaf rosette, often ragged at the mouth. Capitulum subglobose, 8-12 mm wide, grey, becoming white; involucral bracts shorter than capitulum, broadly elliptic, c. 3 mm long, yellow, brown or coppery. Flowers c. 5 mm long greyish-white with hairy tips; male flowers with black anthers.

Habitat: In seasonal pools, swampy ground and peat bogs.
