Description:
Large, many-stemmed shrub or small tree. Bark dark purple-brown, smooth; younger branches often velvety. Leaves alternate, ovate, 3-veined from the base, darker green and rough above; almost silvery-white, covered in woolly hairs below, margins entire. Flowers in axillary clusters, very small, greenish-white, unisexual on the same tree. Fruit a very small nut, enclosed in the papery remains of the flower.

Habitat: In riverine thickets and open woodland, particularly among boulders and on rocky kopjes.
Altitude range: Up to 1900 m
Flowering time:Nov - Dec
Worldwide distribution: Eastern Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Namibia and Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Also in Yemen.
