Description:
Perennial scrambling herb, stems erect or ascending, up to 1 m, growing from a woody rhizome. Leaves alternate, up to 10 × 5 cm, ovate to lanceolate, scattered stiff hairs on the upper surface, softer hairs on the veins below; margin coarsely serrate. Petiole and stems covered in short erect hairs. Flowers in small dense clusters in the upper leaf axils, surrounded by narrowly triangular bracts, unisexual. Fruit an achene, c. 2.5 mm, shiny white, enclosed in the persistent perianth.

Habitat: In high rainfall woodland, submontane evergreen forest, riverine forest, moist tall grassland, usually in shade of dense vegetation, often on termite hills.

Worldwide distribution: Yemen, Ethiopia, Somalia, Cameroon, E DRC, Angola, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Also recorded from South America.
