Description:
Usually a scrambling shrub with climbing branches up to 10 m long aided by paired, recurved climbing hooks; young branches with soft orange to red hairs. Leaves opposite or in whorls of three, oblong-ovate to almost round, up to 19.5 cm long, discolorous, green and sparsely hairy above, velvety and with sessile yellowish to reddish glands beneath; margin entire or irregularly crenate; petiole 1-10 cm long, articulate with the basal part often woody and forming the climbing hooks after the leaves fall. Inflorescences in dense, axillary and terminal heads up to 20 cm in diameter. Flowers creamy to white, sweetly scented, with a tube 8-10 mm long. Fruit 10-12 mm long, surrounded by the persistent, obtusely lobed, cup-like calyx, black when ripe.

Notes:
Derivation of specific name: johnstonii: after Sir Henry (Harry) Hamilton Johnston (1858-1927), British administrator and explorer, who collected in Kenya and led a scientific expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro. He also discovered and named the okapi in Congo.
Habitat: Along margins of montane evergreen forest.
