Description:
Tufted annual; roots thin, reddish; stems 2─15(─25) cm tall, 0.2─0.5 mm across. Leaves usually 1 per stem, pale green, filiform. Involucral bract 1, erect, to 10(─16) cm long. Inflorescence pseudolateral with a single globose to ovoid spikelet; spikelet bracts dark brown to red-brown.

Derivation of specific name: hemi means "half" and sphaer means "a ball" or "globular." (from Greek)
Habitat: Shallow soil over rock pavements, swamp margins, seasonally inundated grassland, rice fields. Occurs in small colonies.
Altitude range: 450 - 2000 m
