Description:
Perennial herb, 65-200 cm high, growing from a short, thick, vertical rhizome with extensive thick fusiform roots. Leaves 4-7 in a basal rosette, oblong-lanceolate, 25-80 cm long, hairless, sheathing at the base, often pseudo-petiolate. Inflorescence a lax panicle, up to 80 cm long (excluding peduncle). Pedicels articulated above the middle, lower ones 4-9 per node, up to 30 mm long in fruit. Flowers greenish, urn-shaped; tepals narrow, 3-veined,scabrid on the margins. Stamens shorter than the perianth; filaments longer than anthers; style more or less as long as stamens. Capsule obovoid, shallowly deltoid, 5-9 mm long.

Derivation of specific name: andongense: named for Punto Andongo in Angola.
Habitat: In open woodland and along forest margins, often on termite mounds.
Altitude range: 1000 - 1800 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
