Description:
A tree, beginning as an epiphyte, reaching a massive size with a widely spreading crown. Adventitious roots from lateral branches thicken to become pillars supporting the branches. Leafy branches up to 12 mm. thick, varying from densely hairy to glabrous. Leaves spirally arranged, leathery, subovate to oblong, up to 24 × 9.5 cm, apex subacute to obtuse, base cordate. Figs borne singly or paired in the leaf axils, or on bare branches.
Type location:
Tanzania
Notes: Elephants break the adventitious roots, which are necessary for the support of the main branches.
Derivation of specific name: bussei: named after W. Busse, German agricultural officer and collector in Tanganyika (now Tanzania).
Habitat: Alluvial terraces of the Luangwa and Zambezi River Valleys.
Altitude range: Up to 600 m
Flowering time:Sep - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Along the East African coast from Somalia to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
