Description:
Perennial shrub up to 5 m. tall; stems somewhat angular when young, densely greyish stellate hairy; older stems woody. Leaves suborbicular or broadly ovate, up to 20 × 18 cm. but much smaller in upper leaves, cordate at the base, dark green and very shortly stellate velvety above, much paler, greyish, densely stellate-velvety beneath; margin usually distinctly crenate or serrate; petiole usually about as long as the lamina. Flowers numerous, axillary heads, aggregated in terminal and lateral, ultimately leafless heads, pale mauve, lavender or lilac with deep-red-purple centre and radiating purple veins. Petals c. 12 mm. long. Staminal tube deep red-purple and hairless in conical portion, stellate-hairy at the apex. Fruit c. 10 × 15 mm., depressed-subglobose, densely stellate-hairy. Mericarps 12–25, c. 10 × 5–6 mm., not awned.
