Description:
Shrub or straggling small tree. Leaves dull green, obovate, with conspicuous net-veining below, often with hairs along the midrib. Flowers axillary, solitary or in few-flowered clusters, creamy-white, fragrant. Fruit fleshy, almost spherical, somewhat flattened at the apex, yellow when ripe. The persistent calyx lobes are leaf-like and conspicuous.

Derivation of specific name: squarrosa: rough with stiff, spreading scales, bracts or other processes.
Habitat: Along streams and in riverine forest, on rocky hill sides and below granite kopjes.
Altitude range: Up to 1200 m
Flowering time:Nov - Dec
Worldwide distribution: From Kenya to Mozambique, extending inland to Zambia and Zimbabwe along major river valleys; also an outlier in the DRC
