Description:
Evergreen shrub or small tree. Leaves elliptic-oblong, shiny dark green above, lighter green below; margin densely fringed with hairs, especially when young. Flowers in short axillary sprays, white, stalk and calyx covered in white hairs. The calyx is persistent, the five lobes joining to form a swollen capsule, completely enveloping the fruits.

Derivation of specific name: whyteanum: after Alexander Whyte (1834-1908), Scottish plant explorer, and botanist who collected in Liberia, Kenya, Malawi and Uganda.
Habitat: In high rainfall areas, in scrub, woodland and forest often associated with rocky places.
Altitude range: 980 - 2280 m
Flowering time:Aug - Nov
Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
