Description:
Perennial herb growing from vertical napiform tuber; stems one to many 6-20 cm long, ascending or erect, reddish, pubescent; Leaves subsessile, lamina narrowly linear, 2.5-10 x 0.1-0.5 cm, with spreading white hairs on midrib and margins; inflorescences extra-axillary, in umbels of 3-5 flowers; peduncles 1-3 cm long, pedicels 0.7-1 cm long, both densely pubescent; bracts filiform, pubescent; sepals lanceolate to narrowly oblong, 3-4 x 0.5-1 mm, densely pubescent; corolla rotate to partially reflexed, lobes oblong to broadly ovate, 4-6 x 2.5-3.5 mm, acute, adaxial surface greenish-white tinged with red or brown, glabrous, adaxial face green tinged brown, pubescent; corona lobes arising at base of the staminal column, (4)5-8 mm long, ± cucullate basally with upper margins reaching top of column, mid-line drawn out into a long-attenuate tip, acute or rounded apically, off-white with a reddish fleshy midline or the entire lobe mottled red, cavity and mid-line of lobe papillose; follicles erect, narrowly fusiform, 5-8 x 0.6 cm, minutely but densely pubescent; seeds flattened, verrucose, with a slightly inflated marginal rim, ± 5 x 4 mm.

Notes:
Derivation of specific name: randii: named after Dr R.F. Rand (1856-1937), English Medical doctor and early plant collector in Zimbabwe.
Habitat: Montane grassland and seasonally wet dambo grasslands
Altitude range: 1000 - 2800 m
Flowering time:Nov - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Southern Tanzania and northern Malawi through DRC and Zambia to Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
