Description:
Perennial twining herb. Stems velvety. Leaves variable, broadly elliptic or rhombic, often more or less 3-lobed near the apex, glossy dark green and hairless above, paler and sparsely appressed hairy below; petiole up to 1 cm long. Flowers in axillary spikes, small, unisexual. Male flowers numerous in rather loose spikes up to 9 cm long. Female spikes shorter with fewer flowers on a somewhat swollen rhachis and a peduncle up to 2.5 cm long. Fruits in clusters of 2-5, bright orange when ripe.

Derivation of specific name: kirkii: named after Dr John Kirk (1832-1922), who accompanied David Livingstone on his Zambezi expedition of 1858.
Habitat: In forest and dense woodland.
