Description:
Perennial, tendrilous climber up to 2.5 m high, growing from a tuberous rootstock. Branches often greyish. Leaves deeply 1-5-partite or -foliolate, 4-20 cm long; lobes/leaflets linear to narrowly oblong, green above, grey-green, sometimes with purplish spots beneath, with 1-5 prominent veins from the base; petiole 1-5 cm long. Glands at the base of the lamina 2 or 4, 1-1.5 mm in diameter, on two separate wart-like appendages. Stipules linear, c. 1 mm long. Inflorescences on peduncles 1-8 cm long, up to 10-flowered in male inflorescences, 1-3-flowered in female. Flowers cream-coloured on pedicels 3-12 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid, 2.5-6 cm long,smooth and leathery on the surface.

Derivation of specific name: stenodactyla: with narrow, slender "fingers", referring to the leaflets.
Habitat: In grassland, scrub, woodland and on rocky hillsides.
