Description:
Slender erect suffrutex growing from a woody rootstock; stems annual, 1-several, 20-90 cm. tall, unbranched or occasionally branching above, leafy to near apex, covered in soft white fine hairs; leaves ±discolorous, sheathing stem at the base, 4.5-20 x 1-4 cm., narrowly oblong-lanceolate to narrowly-elliptic, tapering acute at apex, cuneate to rounded at base narrowing to a winged petiole-like midrib before grading into cylindrical or narrowly funnel-like, partially or deeply cleft sheath 5-20 mm. long, margins finely sharply irregularly serrate with serrations becoming linear teeth c. 5 mm. long towards base, upper surface green appressed hairy to glabrescent, lower surface whitish hairy; capitula solitary and terminal or 2-4 on long stout stalks; involucres mostly 22-30 x 18-28 mm. spreading to c. 45 mm. wide, obconic-campanulate; phyllaries numerous, appressed sheathing, sparsely puberulous to glabrescent outside, margins very narrowly hyaline c. 4 mm. long and narrowly ovate, increasing to c. 23 mm. long and lorate-lanceolate inside; middle phyllaries to 6 mm. wide, obtuse at apex; inner phyllaries narrower; florets very numerous; corollas bright to deep red, up to 25 mm. long with a long slender tube abruptly dilated into a short cylindric deeply narrowly-lobed limb which exceeds the pappus and involucre, glabrous; achenes 10-15 mm. long, narrowly cylindric, obscurely narrowly many-ribbed, densely hispid; pappus of copious barbellate setae 10-17 mm. long.
