Description:
Slender erect suffrutex growing from a woody rootstock; stems annual, 1-several, 30-135 cm. tall, unbranched or occasionally branching above, leafy, softly finely hairy; leaves discolorous, sheathing stem at the base, 5-16 x 0.4-2 cm., linear-elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, tapering acute to somewhat attenuate at apex, cuneate and subsessile to subauriculate at base, sometimes narrowing to a winged petiole-like midrib c. 10 mm long before grading into cylindrical or narrowly funnel-like sheath c. 20 mm. long, margins finely sharply serrate with serrations becoming linear teeth c. 3 mm. long towards base, upper surface glabrous, lower surface greyish hairy; capitula solitary and terminal or 2-4 on short to long stalks; involucres mostly 14-20 x 8-14 mm. obconic-campanulate; phyllaries appressed sheathing, outer sometimes extending briefly onto stalk, white hairy to glabrescent outside, margins narrowly reddish-tinged hyaline c. 3 mm. long and narrowly ovate outside, increasing to c. 18 mm. long and lorate-lanceolate inside; middle phyllaries to 4.5 mm. wide, narrowly lovate and rounded to obtuse at apex; inner phyllaries narrower; florets numerous; corollas bright to deep red, up to 18 mm. long with a long slender tube abruptly dilated into a short cylindric deeply narrowly-lobed limb which exceeds the pappus and involucre, glabrous; achenes 7-8.5 mm. long, narrowly cylindric, obscurely narrowly many-ribbed, densely hispid; pappus of copious subplumose setae 9-12 mm. long.
