Description:	Tufted perennial (15─)20─70 cm tall with a short creeping rhizome. var. boeckeleriana: Inflorescences mostly head-like with all spikelets sessile, but 1-3 pedunculate additional inflorescences or spikelets sometimes present.
Type location:	Eritrea
Notes:	Zambian distribution var. boeckeleriana: FZ divisions: B,N,W - Zambian prov.: Nw.N,C,W. Var. transiens (K.Schum.) R.W.Haines is also likely to be present in Zambia. The inflorescence is more lax, typically with a single sessile spikelet surrounded by 1-5 stalked spikelets. Red data list status: Although known from just two localities in Zambia, it is widespread globally: Least concern.
Derivation of specific name:	boeckeleriana: In honour of Johann Otto Boeckeler (1803-1899) who contributed to sedge taxonomy.
Habitat:	Dry grassland, rocky outcrops, seepages in Brachystegia woodland.
