Description of the genus

Robust annual (in ours). Spikelets unisexual, the male and female spikelets in separate inflorescences. Male inflorescence terminal, composed of digitate or paniculate racemes; internodes bearing paired spikelets, one on a slender, free pedicel; glumes chartaceous; both spikelets male. Female inflorescence a single, axillary raceme, wrapped in a number of sheaths; internodes (in ours) much condensed and bearing paired sessile spikelets at each node. Spikelets: lower floret barren; upper female; lower glume crustaceous, smooth; style long, 1, silky, pendulous from inflorescence tip.

Worldwide: 4 species in Central America
