Description of the genus

Trees, rarely shrubs, evergreen. Young persistent branchlets distinguished from deciduous branchlets by shorter segments. Leaves reduced to small teeth. Inflorescences of alternating whorls of flowers each subtended by a tooth-like bract and 2 bracteoles; bracteoles usually persistent. Infructescence pedunculated, pubescent, at least when immature. Fruit a samara, pale yellow-brown or greyish, dull, glabrous.

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical, dry subtropical and warm temperate regions.

Zambia: 1 cultivated taxon.
