Herbs, subshrubs or shrubs. Stipules present, persistent. Leaves opposite, rarely alternate, sometimes fleshy, simple, 2-3-foliolate or pinnate. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, hypogynous. Sepals (4-)5. Petals (4-)5, rarely 0. Disk usually present. Ovary superior, 4-5-locular. Fruit a capsule, sometimes spiny, breaking up into indehiscent cocci. Worldwide: 27 genera and 285 species, in tropical and warm areas, especially arid zones, sometimes in saline areas. Zambia: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
