Herbs or low shrubs. Stipules present, paired. Leaves opposite or whorled, simple. Flowers small, axillary, solitary or in small cymes, fascicles or whorled clusters, bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 3-5. Petals 3-5(-6). Stamens as many as or twice as many as the sepals; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary superior, 3-5-locular, multiovulate; styles 2-5, free. Fruit a septicidal capsule. Seeds without endosperm. Worldwide: 2 genera and 34 species, mainly tropical, some temperate. Zambia: 1 genus and 4 taxa. |
