Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, sometimes the lower opposite, sometimes appearing fasciculate. Flowers sessile in spikes. Bracts present, longer than calyx. Calyx spathaceous, membranous or hyaline. Corolla tube slender, divided ± to base, with a large 4 (-5)-lobed limb. Stamens 4, didynamous, inserted on limb. Ovary 2-locular; style entire. Capsule ± ovoid.

Worldwide: 25 species in South Africa and the tropics.
