Description of the genus

Herbs. Leaves opposite, dentate or ± entire. Capitula in lax corymbose panicles, homogamous, discoid. Involucre campanulate or hemispheric, ± connate at base. Phyllaries c.3-seriate. Receptacular scales 0. Corolla tubular, 5-lobed, white or mauve. Achenes 3-5-angled. Pappus of 3-5 short, rigid, gland-tipped lobes. For this genus, we have followed the account by S.A.L. Smith in FTEA Compositae (Part 3).

Worldwide: 24 species in tropical America and Africa
