Description of the genus

Annual herbs or suffrutices. Leaves alternate, simple, semi-amplexicaul, usually discolorous. Capitula homogamous and discoid or (in ours) heterogamous; inner florets actinomorphic, bisexual; outer male, radiate. Phyllaries many-seriate, imbricate. Receptacular scales present, resembling the inner phyllaries. Ray florets when present with large, deep-red, 3-fid rays. Achenes barrel-shaped, 5-angled. Pappus of 4-5, caducous, barbellate setae.

Worldwide: 12 species in eastern, central and southern tropical Africa
