Inflorescence axillary, much-branched; armed often with a sterile, whip-like prolongation; flowers usually arranged in 2 ranks; bracts many, persistent. Flowers minute. Fruit usually solitary, sometimes 2 or 3; globose or ellipsoid; covered in scales.
