Marquesia Gilg

Description of the genus

Tall trees, with buttresses. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire, penninerved, with an extra-floral nectary at the base of the midrib on the upper surface; stipules caducous. Flowers in large terminal panicles, radially symmetric, bisexual; sepals 5, petals 5, white; fruit surrounded by the 5 acrescent sepals.

Comment: A recent proposal to validate the name Trillesanthus has been challenged. A ruling will be made at a specialist meeting.
