Description of the genus

Submerged aquatic herb. Leaves sessile in whorls of 3, or rarely 4, dark green, oblong-lanceolate, with serrated edges. Flowers very small, floating, green-purple.

Worldwide: 6 species, native to North America (Canadian pondweed).
