Description of the genus

Small acaulescent rhizomatous herb. Leaves long-petiolate; lamina serrate, palmately nerved. Flowers in scorpioid cymes, 4-merous. Calyx campanulate-turbinate; lobes small, persistent; petals obliquely oblong-obovate, minutely glandular-ciliate. Ovary adnate to the calyx for most of its length, apically depressed, with a crown of 4(–8) conspicuous scales. Fruiting calyx slightly accrescent; capsule with the persistent crown of scales slightly exserted. Seeds obcuneate, minutely papillate.

Worldwide: Nine species in tropical Africa.
