Description of the genus

Shrubs. Leaves petiolate, usually elliptic and serrate at the margin, frequently glandular-punctate. Flowers in terminal and axillary panicles or racemes. Calyx connate below the middle, with 5 tubercles within; petals, white, whitish or nearly translucent, inserted at the mouth of the calyx-tube. Fruit a capsule ellipsoid or clavate, dehiscing septicidally into 3 valves from the apex downwards. Seed obovoid, straight.

Worldwide: Six species in tropical Africa.
