Annual or perennial herbs with leaves arising from the base. Inflorescence a terminal head of few to many crowded cone-like spikes. Main involucral bracts leafy, erect or spreading. Spike composed of numerous bracts, spirally arranged in 4-5 rows, each bract subtending a flower enclosed by 2 delicate hypogynous scales. Flowers 1-flowered, bisexual. Stamens 1-2. Style 2-3-branched. Nut obovoid. Worldwide: 8 species in tropical and warm regions, excluding the Pacific. Zambia: 12 taxa. |
