Description of the genus

Dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate or opposite. Flowers unisexual in short axillary panicles, with small bracteoles. Male flowers with short and solid perianth tube, stamens 3-4. Female flowers with 3-4-lobed perianth. Stigma 3-4-lobed. Fruit a spherical drupe, crowned with the persistent perianth lobes. Seed 1.

Worldwide: 6-7 species occurring in the Mediterranean area and from Africa to India

Zambia: 2 taxa.
