Description of the genus

Prostrate perennial herbs with entire, opposite leaves. Inflorescences consisting of dense, sessile, axillary ovoid heads. Flowers bisexual, solitary in the axil of each bract, subtended by 2 bracteoles. Sterile flowers 0. Tepals densely woolly, 1-veined, united for about half their length (in ours). Stamens 5. Capsule thin-walled, splitting irregularly. Seed flattened.

Worldwide: 5 species, occuring from southern USA to Argentina; G. densa an increasing tropical weed.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
