Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stipules present, membranous. Leaves opposite, often in false whorls. Inflorescences of axillary or terminal many-flowered cymes. Sepals 5, with a broad, green, strongly marked keel and scarious margins. Petals much shorter than the sepals, up to 5 or occasionally 0, entire or emarginate. Stamens 3-5. Styles united below, with 3 arms. Capsule 3-valved.

Worldwide: 16 species, cosmopolitan
