Itea Gronov. ex L.

Description of the genus

Climbing shrub or small tree. Stipules minute, linear. Leaves alternate, glandular-serrate. Flowers bisexual or polygamous in branched axillary panicles. Calyx with 5 lobes. Petals 5. Stamens 5, inserted at the margin of the disk, alternating with the petals. Ovary partly inferior, 2-locular. Styles 2. Stigmas capitate.

Comment: According to the most recent taxonomic research by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG-III), this has been moved from Escalloniaceae to the small family Iteacea while the monospecific genus Choristylis has been sunk under Itea.

Worldwide: 16 species in eastern tropical and southern Africa, Eastern and Southeast Asia and the eastern US.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
