Description of the genus

Rhizome creeping or ascending. Fronds spaced or tufted, herbacious or coriaceous. Stipes not articulated, scaly at the base. Lamina 2- to 4- pinnatifid , basal pinnae strongly basiscopically developed and almost as long as the lamina; ultimate segments with a sharp, long bristle-like point; veins free. Rhachis stramineous. Sori round, indusia coriaceous, kidney-shaped, spores monolete.

Derivation of name: arachne: spider, -odes: in the form of; alluding to the finely divided pentagonal outline of the lamina of some species.

Worldwide: About 50-70 species, mostly tropical and warm-temperate distribution.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
