Description of the genus

Herbs or small shrubs. Leaves simple, 3-5-veined from the base. Flowers small, in dense clusters, these sometimes merging to form spikes or corymbs. Flowers bisexual. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals 5, yellow. Staminodes 0 or inconspicuous. Ovary 1-locular. Capsule 1-seeded.

Derivation of name: for Augustin Friedrich Walther (1688-1746), German anatomist, botanist and physician.

Worldwide: 30-50 species, mostly tropical America.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
