Description

Above the falls are riparian habitats such as sand bars and cliffs, fringing forest and when the water is low, exposed rocks and rapids. Away from the main river mopane woodland dominates the shallow basaltic soils and baobabs Adansonia digitata are common. On the Kalahari sand there is Kalahari woodland and a few small patches of mutemwa. A number of rare and interesting wetland herbs have been collected from the falls'spray zone. Canscora kirkii (Gentianaceae) is endemic to the area. The basalts have many species which are rare elsewhere in Zambia such as Acacia senegal var. leiorhachis (Mimosoideae), Bolusanthus speciosus (Papilionoideae) and Terminalia stuhlmannii (Combretaceae). For a thorough survey of the area's flora and fauna, see Phillipson (1975).
