Description:
Perennial herb up to 70 cm high but usually smaller, growing from a globose bulb with a brown or purplish leathery skinned neck. Leaves many, often spiralled when young, filiform to linear, up to 27 cm long, sparsely to densely bristly hairy at margin and on the midrib, produced after flowers at first but together later in the season. Inflorescence 9–15-flowered, longer than leaves, subsecund on a terete peduncle; bracts lanceolate, falling early. Flowers c.15 mm long with perianth segments subequal, fused into a tube and slightly recurved at the apex. Stamens appressed to inner perianth segments. Style short with a capitate stigma. Capsule oblong to globose, ridged, c.12 mm long.

Derivation of specific name: marlothii: named after H.W.R. Marloth (1855-1931) South African pharmacist and botanist.
Habitat: Mostly on rocky ground in open woodland.
Altitude range: 790 - 1800 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana Angola, Namibia and northern South Africa.
