Colony forming perennial herb from short ovoid rhizomes 3-5 cm. long. Roots with fusiform tubers. Leaf sheaths forming a well-developed pseudostem; leaf lamina narrowly elliptic. Flowering before or with the leaves, flowers borne on very short peduncles. Petals whitish and translucent; labellum mauve or purple with a yellow mark at the base, occasionally white. Fruit a leathery capsule, subterranean, breaking through the surface at maturity.

Sudan and Ethiopia
Notes: Further collections may reveal that this comprises more than one taxon.
Derivation of specific name: aethiopicus: of Ethiopia, a historic name for large parts of Africa
Habitat: Various deciduous woodland types, wooded grassland, rocky outcrops.
Altitude range: 1350 - 1850 m
Flowering time:Nov - Jan
Worldwide distribution: Senegal and Ethiopia to Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and KwaZulu-Natal.
