Description:
Terrestrial herb, up to 90 cm; tubers forming a chain, connected by a rhizome. Leaves 4-7 forming a fan, linear, present at the time of flowering (image 1). Inflorescence laxly up to 10-flowered. Sepals spreading, greenish to purple-brown. Petals pale straw-yellow, flushed with purple or pink, lying flat over the lip giving the flowers a distinctly flattened appearance. Lip 3-lobed with the mid-lobe flat and broad, pale straw-yellow with bright yellow to orange papillae. Spur 1-6 mm, cylindric, often slightly bifid at the tip.

Tropical South Africa, probably Zimbabwe
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: ovalis: broadly elliptic, oval, referring to the shape of the mid-lobe of the lip;
bainesii: named after Thomas Baines, explorer and painter, who travelled with David Livingstone.
Habitat: A species of montane grassland and woodland, often on rocky hill sides.
Altitude range: 1000 - 2135 m

Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, South Africa.
