Twining liane, woody at the base. The leaves are broadly ovate to suborbicular and strongly peltate; flowers in false compound umbels, axillary, sexes separate but similar.
Type location:
Derivation of specific name: abyssinica: of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia)
Habitat: In open and wooded grassland, preferring moist and shady places near rivers or swamps.
