Description:
Shrubby herb with spreading branches, sometimes annual, up to 1.3 m tall, rarely taller. Stems and branches with appressed greyish hairs, especially when young. Leaves imparipinnate mostly with 6-9 pairs of narrowly obovate to elliptic leaflets, mostly hairless above, appressed pubescent beneath; petiole and rhachis hairy like the stems; stipules up to 10 mm long, more or less linear. Inflorescences fairly lax terminal racemes up to 30 cm long, often appearing leaf-opposed. Flowers variable in colour but often whitish with a puprple centre; petals 9-13 mm long. Pods 45-60 mm long, densely covered in brown or grey, loosely appressed or ascending hairs, often darker at the margins.

Notes:
Derivation of specific name: noctiflora: night-flowering.
Habitat: Along river banks and in stony or rocky places in woodland.
Altitude range: Up to 1000 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Probably native from Uganda to Mpumalanga, South Africa but introduced in West Africa, DRC and many other parts thoughout the tropics, where it has been cultivated and now has become naturalized.
