Description:
Unarmed, much-branched scrambling shrub up to 3 m tall. Bark of smaller branchlets brownish and finely velvety when young. Leaves elliptic-ovate to elliptic-lanceolate, mostly 1.5-6 cm long, obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded or cordate at the base, 3-5-veined from the base, sparsely pubescent,mainly on midrib and veins beneath and with tufts of hairs in the axils; margin crenate-serrate or almost entire; petiole mostly 2-5 mm long. Stipules narrowly triangular-lanceolate, 2-3 mm long, sparsely pubescent. Inflorescences unbranched, up to 7 cm long, usually on dwarf side branchlets, flowers mostly male with 1-3 female flowers at the top. Fruit somewhat, 3-lobed, up to 4 mm wide, sparsely pubescent and echinate.

Eastern DRC
Notes: This is the only species of Acalypha in Zimbabwe that has inflorescences with female flowers at the top and male flowers below.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In understorey of riverine and lake shore evergreen forest.
Altitude range: 500 - 1200 m

Worldwide distribution: Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, eastern DRC, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
