Description:	Scrambling perennial herb, either erect and bushy or low and mat-forming. Leaves very variable in shape and size, from linear lanceolate to ovate, more or less hairy, often markedly discolourous. Flowers in elongated clusters, mostly on short lateral branches, greenish to yellowish, sometimes purple-tinged. Fruit small, yellowish-brown to reddish-brown, grooved and tuberculate.

Habitat:	In bracken scrub at the edges of forest and grassland, in riverine thickets and along the edges of marshes.

Worldwide distribution:	The eastern side of Africa from Ethiopia to South Africa. Also on the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula.
