Description:
Erect perennial herb, growing from a woody rhizome. Stems simple or branched with hairs on the lower parts only. Lower leaves with very long petioles, mostly lanceolate, occasionally with a few narrow lobes near the base; margin entire to slightly crenate-dentate. Upper leaves linear, with or without 1-2 pairs of linear lobes. Capitula subspherical, up to 2.5 cm in diameter. Flowers white to cream, rarely yellow, hairy on the outside of the corollas.

Derivation of specific name: pungens: prickly, puncturing
Habitat: In moist grassland, along streamsides and in swampy places.
Altitude range: 1200 - 2100 m
