Perennial herb, up to 45 cm. Leaves basal, pilose when young, often appearing after flowering. Stems erect, not swollen near the apex. Capitula solitary, terminal. Ray florets white, sometimes tinged with red on the outside, spreading widely. See G. piloselloides for comparison.
Type location:
South Africa
Derivation of specific name: viridifolia: with green leaves, referring to the fact that the leaves are green on both surfaces (not white beneath)
Habitat: A pyrophytic species, occurring in sub montane grassland, less often in woodland.
Altitude range: 850 - 1500 m
Flowering time:Oct - Dec
Worldwide distribution: NE Africa south to South Africa
